Abstract Abstract #74: Forty-six bred bitches were given levels of 0.25 (10 dogs), 1 .O (16 dogs) and 5.0 (20 dogs) mg/kg/day polychlorinated biphenyl (Aroclor 1254) from the day of breeding to day of necropsy. Sixteen dogs were maintained as untreated controls. A significant decrease in the number of bitches pregnant, the number of live pups/litter at birth and the number of live pups after 2 weeks was observed in those bitches given PCB at a level of 5.0 mg/kg/day. There was a significant increase in the percentage of resorptions. Teratogenic abnormalities consisted of enlarged fontanelles, cleft palates and superfluous phalanges. The lower doses were essentially no-effect levels on reproductive performance. Eighteen bred sows were given levels of 1.0 (5 sows), 10.0 (6 sows) and 30.0 (7 sows) mg/kg/day of PCB 1254, from 21 days prior to breeding to day of necropsy. Five sows served as non-treated controls. Dose-related effects were seen in all treatment levels as decreases in number of pregnancies, number of live pigs farrowed per litter and percentage of live pigs after 2 weeks of age. Only the number of resorptions in the 10.0 mg/kg group did not show a dose related decrease over the 1.0 mg/kg group. Syndactyly and cleft palates were observed in the 10 mg/kg group with patent fontanelles and cleft palates being observed in the 30 mg/kg group.
