Abstract Testing was conducted with the fathead minnow, Pimephales promelas Rafinesque, to estimate the acute and chronic toxicity of 1,4-dioxane to fishes. A static acute test with juvenile fathead minnow resulted in a 96-h LCSO of 13,000 mg/L; sublethal effects were noted at 10,000 mg/Land higher. The highest no observed effect level (NOEL) was 6,000 mg/L. The test substance in the static test was practically non-toxic to the fathead minnow, according to a categorization system used by the U.S. EPA. The chronicity of 1,4-dioxane was assessed by conducting a flow-through embryo-larval test. Fathead minnow embryos, less than 24 h ~ fertilization, were used to start the test. Fathead minnow embryos were exposed to mean analyzed concentrations of 27.6, 40.3, 65.3, 99.7, and 145 mg/L The test was terminated after 32 days of exposure. Statistical analysis of the data demonstrated no significant differences (p<0.05) in the number of embryos that hatched, day-to-mean hatch, number of deformed larvae, larval survival or larval weight at any test concentration. The MATC is greater than 145 mg/L.
